Communicerende hydrocefalie<\/strong> treedt op wanneer de stroom van het cerebrospinaal vocht (CSF) geblokkeerd is nadat het de ventrikels heeft verlaten.<\/h4>\n

Deze vorm van hydrocefalie kan het gevolg zijn van een verdikking van het arachno\u00efd rond de basis van de hersenen, waardoor de CSF-stroom van de spinale naar de corticale subarachno\u00efdale ruimtes wordt geblokkeerd. CSF stroomt normaal ongehinderd door de ventrikels en in de subarachno\u00efdale ruimte. Een verdikking van de arachno\u00efdlaag rond de buitenkant van de hersenen kan de vrije stroom van CSF via deze weg verhinderen.<\/p>\n

Niet-communicerende hydrocefalie<\/strong>, ook obstructieve hydrocefalie genoemd, ontstaat wanneer de stroom van CSF geblokkeerd is langs een of meer van de nauwe doorgangen die de ventrikels met elkaar verbinden.<\/h4>\n

Een van de meest voorkomende oorzaken is aquaductale stenose, een vernauwing van het aquaduct van Sylvius, een kleine doorgang tussen de derde en vierde ventrikels van de hersenen.<\/p>\n

Sommige mensen met niet-communicerende (obstructieve) hydrocefalie kunnen een chirurgische ingreep ondergaan die een endoscopische derde ventriculostomie (ETV) wordt genoemd.
